Project Runway Canada: Jessica Biffi Dress Review

2009 March 9

So I went to the Winner’s in Oakville to check out Jessica Biffi’s dress.

Sadly the coral dress that I thought looked really good in the pictures turned out to be a wishy-washy prom dress colour, even less flattering on my skin tone than the original green.  I really don’t look good in cotton candy colours.

I’m typically a size 8 but practically everything was peeking when I tried that size.  I eventually tried on the black in size 10.

Sadly the judges ended up being right about not having enough room for a proper women-of-a-certain-size bra which would have four hooks at the back instead of two.  My strapless kept peeking out of the top of the dress on both the front and the back.

The pleats which looked so pretty on the model looked a bit silly on me because they would flatten out and disappear where ever I was bigger.

Either ways, since I already had a Greta Constantine dress that is quite similar, I decided not to buy it.

Did anybody else try it on?

Did anybody buy it?

I’d go try it on, but that would mean I’d have to walk into a Winners store.

@auntiefashion Haha-! I can’t stand shopping at Winners but I may have to go and try on the dress. Nothing in the designers’ lineup was interesting this week- yawn.

I tried it on. There will be a post about it tomorrow.

Not my style and disappointed that a such a small run of clothing wasn’t made in Canada

I popped into the Winners store on Bloor Street in Toronto to see the dress. I ended up trying on the green and the lavender. I tried on the size 4 and you could totally tell that my belly button was an innie, so I went up a size. Same result. Plus, the visible panty lines were a nightmare. I didn’t end up buying it, and frankly, the dress didn’t look like it was selling gangbusters.

I tried it on and hated it. I do some personal shopping although I’m a designer by profession and my question for Winners is: How is this day? Day connotates office and I know of very few offices where one shoulder assymetrical dresses are appropriate. I go by my husband’s office dress code, it’s about as typical as you will find anywhere and most of the managers there thought it was not a suitable choice for day. And it’s a bit bland for evening. It’s a complete miss; neither day nor evening and I have no idea what the judges were thinking.

I loved the dress but it was a little risky for office attire. I think it would be okay for evening in the black.

I went to Winners here in Calgary and tried on at least 10 of the Jessica dresses. Although I loved the lavender colour, it washed me out and I’m very fair. The tangerine was an absolute no. I really wanted the mint, but, unfortunately they didn’t have it in my size so I ended up with the black.
What I discovered, through trying on so many dresses was this…that they dresses were sewn very poorly. Many had bulging/rippling seams and out of all ten, the only one that hung properly and showed the key-hole design in the front was the one that I bought. Non of the rest of them had been constructed properly, and so the material just didn’t look right. Also, I tried on 2 different size 10 and two different size 12 and the first one of each of those sizes were gappy at the back. It turns out that I did buy a size 10 which fit me perfectly. In my opinion, such a lovely dress should have had more time taken in quality control before they were shipped to the Winners stores. Also, it would be nice if more people across the country could have an option of buying one. They are mostly sold in Ontario and Quebec.
For those who are worried about VPL (Visible Panty Lines), get yourself a pair of Slimmers pantyhose. They hide the bumps and bulges and allows the dress to hang much more smoothly. Expect to go up a size from your normal size, but if you do find a dress that has been constructed properly, you’ll be very happy with it. Oh yeah, take a tip from Project Runway….add some punch to the black dress with a little pair of red strappy shoes for the WOW factor.
